ZAC CLICHY BATIGNOLLES
Housing and other programmes

This mixed-programme structure has three elements: housing (both market-rate and social), a cultural centre including a chapel, and an assisted-living home. These programmes must be flexible, to accommodate a phased building process, they must relate to each other, and the whole project must be in dialogue with the surrounding context, comprising both the ‘traditional’ Parisian block and the elements of the Clichy-Batignolles redevelopment, including a large new park.

An L-shaped volume, which contains the cultural programmes on the ground floor, defines the limits of the block and opens up towards the new park to the south.
At the northeast corner, a V-shaped cut-out marks the main public entrance to the cultural centre. Double-orientated apartments are located in the narrow legs of the building, which slope down gently from the northeast ‘peak’ this opens up views towards the park, optimizes solar radiation into the block and allows the roof to house solar panels.

A sculptural bell tower marks the entrance of the chapel, which is inserted under the main entrance and lit, like an underground grotto, through cut-outs in the piazza above. Although they are connected underground, the assisted-living home appears as a separate smaller volume, nestled inside the L-shaped one it is designed to maximize green space and views for its residents, with protected outdoor spaces, planted terraces and double-orientated rooms.
