PARALLEL WORLDS
Exhibition

Habiter Autrement was commissioned by the Moderna Museet in Stockholm to collaborate with the pioneering multi-media artist Eija-Liisa Ahtila on a major retrospective of Ahtila’s work. One of the most internationally recognised Nordic contemporary artists, Ahtila works with video and performance to tell stories in moving images, often through multi-screen installations that challenge viewers’ experiences of their own identities and overturn their perceptions of time and space.

For the exhibition, Habiter Autrement worked with Natalie Saccu de Franchi to erect four enclosed volumes inside the museum. Each volume has a distinct character, geometry and colour.
Together they create a variety of spatial conditions: interiors, exteriors, passages, shelters and walls. Inside and around this complex set of spaces, each piece is shown in unique conditions. Annunciation, a central piece consisting of three projected images, is shown inside a box with a strong blue colour. The House is given its own ‘house’: a grey volume with a slanted roof. A new work, Horizontal, is shown on the dark green exterior wall of one volume that, on its interior, shelters Where is where.

In addition to creating a different setting for each piece, the volumes create highlights and shadows, which are manipulated to create darker areas that create calm entrance zones, where visitors’ eyes can get used to reduced light before seeing the artwork itself.
