SLUSSEN
Masterplan

Slussen (‘the lock’) is Stockholm's main urban hub. Historically one of the city’s most important meeting and trade sites, it currently acts a barrier between the two densely populated islands of Gamla Stan and Södermalm. The overscaled roadway system separates key neighbourhoods into isolated pieces, and the area is confusing and difficult to navigate.

The masterplan transforms this knot into fluid ‘Meeting Lines’, formed by distinct programmes along three bridges: a ‘lounge’ for the whole city over the subway, a park running 500 m over the main roadway, and an extension of the quay over the new lock. Together they form a venue for all seasons, with climate-protected decks for winter and, for summer, open decks with
sight lines in all directions. The range and variety of possible activities is extended by newly-established waterfront promenades and bike lanes, and by enhancements to public transit and maritime systems.

The Meeting Lines connect Gamla Stan to Södermalm and, at a larger scale, the suburbs to the city. They also link Lake Mälaren to Saltsjön bay and the cliff on Södermalm to the quays on both islands. Building over existing infrastructure reduces the built footprint over the water, allowing it to reflect the sky. Layering vehicular and pedestrian traffic creates a new version of the historic typology of the inhabited bridge – one that connects the commercial and cultural activities at either end of the span while creating a new urban landscape with panoramic views of the sea and the city.
