TOLEDO
Masterplan

This masterplan for 2,000 social housing units, including commercial and service facilities, is located only ten minutes from central Toledo by tram. It takes the form of a 36 ha agricultural park, planted with olive groves, cypress alleys and pines – local vegetation types with no need for artificial irrigation. Within the park, ten urban pieces are distributed in order to maintain open space. Each piece will accommodate between 800 and 1,200 people in buildings no higher than six storeys, each enclosing a courtyard with lush vegetation, enabling inhabitants to live simultaneously in natural and urban settings. Each element will be designed by a different architect and will have a strong individual identity.
Running through the centre of the site is an ‘Urban Pier’: a linear housing block with an accessible roof terrace 30 m above ground, hosting public restaurants, bars and shaded seating areas. At one end, the Pier points towards Toledo and Alcazar Castle at the other, it terminates at a ‘Windmill Tower’. Between the upper levels of this tower, vertical-axis, low-noise wind turbines will provide renewable electricity for the housing they also refer to the traditional windmills of the Mancha, the surrounding area. The highest level will have a viewing deck with a panoramic 360-degree view of the landscape and historic Toledo.

Within the masterplan, the same design team is responsible for the design of the Colina de Deportes.
