COLINA DE DEPORTES
Indoor arena

Located on the outskirts of Toledo and conceived as part of a new masterplan for the area, Colina de Deportes is a large arena for 6,500 spectators tucked inside a flowering hill. The arena is strategically located near the perimeter road on the northeast end of the site, easily accessible both by car and public transport. Visible as one of the area’s main attractions, the Colina is equally an architectural and a landscape project. The artificial hill, which rises to over 15 m, is constructed with earth excavated for underground parking. A simple and inexpensive system of roof trusses forms the top of the rise.
Over the arena, the trusses carry strips of soil covered with brightly-coloured flowering oleander shrubs, which alternate with long rooflights, allowing natural light to filter inside. The exterior form of the hill integrates a public garden and promenade with an outdoor sports centre that includes tennis and badminton courts. The southwest slope faces the area’s central plaza, creating an amphitheatre for people to rest, meet and watch events and city life. From the plaza, the Colina’s inviting mix of pink flowers, playing fields and open public spaces is a clear expression of the vibrant integration of this new urban area with its natural surroundings.
